# Splitting your automation with If/then

> Determine which path a subscriber follows in your automation based on a field value, an action or a moment.

With the ‘If/then’ action, you can split your automation into two paths: one path for subscribers who meet your condition, and another for subscribers who do not. Every subscriber who reaches this action immediately follows one of the two paths.

If you do not want to split the automation, but prefer to let it wait on a single path until something happens or a specific moment is reached, use [Wait until…](/wacht-tot).

## Splitting based on a field value

This allows you to check whether a subscriber's field has a specific value. To do this, you configure three settings:

| Setting | What you select |
| ------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| List | The list the subscriber must come from |
| Field | The field that must match a value |
| Value | The value required to meet the condition |

> **Note**
>
> A subscriber in an automation can come from different lists, depending on the selected [starting point](/de-startmomenten-van-een-automation). If the subscriber comes from a list other than the one you select here, this condition will be ignored. You can add extra conditions for those other lists if needed.

## Splitting based on an action

You can also split based on how the subscriber has interacted with your campaigns. You can choose from an extensive list of actions based on three events:

| Action | What you split on |
| ------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Sent | Whether or not the subscriber has been sent an email or campaign |
| Open | Whether or not the subscriber has opened an email or campaign |
| Click | Whether or not the subscriber has clicked in an email or campaign |

## Splitting based on a date or time

If you split based on a date or time, the moment the subscriber reaches this action determines which path they follow. First, choose a unit of time: exact date/time, hour, day of the week, day of the month, month, or year. Next, specify whether the moment must equal the selected value, or be earlier or later. Finally, select the value.

For example, this lets you send a subscriber down one path on Monday and down the other on other days.

## Combining multiple conditions

You can place multiple conditions below each other. For each condition, specify whether it narrows the selection (meaning the subscriber must also meet the new condition) or broadens it (meeting just one of the conditions is enough). ‘- AND -’ or ‘- OR -’ will appear between the conditions so you can see how your selection is structured. With [Wait until…](/wacht-tot), multiple conditions always act as OR.

You can find a detailed example in [sending a subscriber to another list](/automatisch-een-relatie-op-basis-van-een-voorwaarde-toevoegen-aan-een-andere-lijst), where you use the If/then action to add subscribers with a specific field value to a second list.
