# What are the starting points for an automation?

> You can choose from nine starting points for an automation. Depending on the starting point, a subscriber can go through the automation once or multiple times.

The starting moment determines when an automation begins to run for a subscriber. You can choose from nine starting moments:

| Starting moment | When does the automation start? |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [Specific moment](/startmoment-bepaald-moment) | On a date and time set by you. |
| [Manual](/startmoment-handmatig) | As soon as you add existing subscribers to the automation yourself. |
| [Another automation](/startmoment-andere-automation) | From another automation, if you indicate here that this is allowed. |
| [Date/time](/startmoment-datum-in-lijst) | When a date for a subscriber is reached. |
| [Subscribe](/startmoment-inschrijven) | As soon as there is a new subscription. |
| [Click](/startmoment-klikken) | As soon as a subscriber clicks in a campaign or in an email from an automation. |
| [Add label](/startmoment-label-toevoegen) | As soon as a subscriber receives a label. |
| [Open](/startmoment-openen) | As soon as a subscriber opens a campaign or an email from an automation. |
| [Edit](/startmoment-wijzigen) | As soon as a subscriber's field is modified. |

## Running once or multiple times

Whether a subscriber can go through an automation more than once varies per starting moment:

* For three starting moments, you can choose this yourself in the ‘Executes’ field.
* For two starting moments, you can choose between ‘May run multiple times’ and ‘Once per subscriber’.
* For ‘Date/time’, you determine this by choosing between day-and-month and day-month-year.
* For the remaining three starting moments, this is fixed.

You can read how this works in detail on the page for each starting moment.
