# Having your newsletter forwarded with a mail-a-friend link

> Insert a link that allows subscribers to share the webversion of your newsletter by email, without losing the formatting.

If a subscriber forwards your newsletter from an email client, part of the design will be lost. You can read why this happens in [Why your newsletter looks different when forwarding and replying](/hoe-kan-het-dat-mijn-nieuwsbrief-bij-doorsturen-en-beantwoorden-er-niet-goed-uitziet). If you want subscribers to be able to easily forward your newsletter while keeping the display neat, create a mail-a-friend link. This allows your subscriber to send an email containing the link to the webversion of your newsletter.

If you are looking for social media share buttons instead of email, use [the Share block](/hoe-kunnen-mijn-relaties-mijn-nieuwsbrief-direct-delen-met-anderen).

## Copying the link to the webversion

First, copy the fixed link to the webversion. Do not use the variable `/tag/web` for this. You can find the fixed link in two places:

* Above your newsletter in step 5 (‘Last check’).
* In the address bar of your browser, when you click ‘View web version’ in the preview.

## Creating the mail-a-friend link

You create the link in the text editor, at the spot in your newsletter where you want your subscribers to see it.

#### Select the text that will be clickable

For example, select the text ‘Share this newsletter with a friend’.

#### Click the chain icon in the text editor

The ‘Link’ window opens.

#### Under Link Type, choose the ‘E-Mail’ option

Fill in the three fields for the forwarding message:

| Field | What you enter |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| E-Mail Address | A question mark (`?`). Your subscriber will fill in the recipient's address themselves later. |
| Message Subject | The subject of the forwarding message, for example ‘A newsletter you might like!’. |
| Message Body | An accompanying text for the recipient, containing the copied link to the webversion. |

#### Save the link

Click ‘OK’.

> **Warning**
>
> Sometimes a double `??` ends up in the source code, causing the link not to work. Open the source code in the text editor and change `mailto:??subject` to `mailto:?subject`.

## What your subscriber sees

When a subscriber clicks this link, their own email client opens with your prepared message. Your subscriber only needs to fill in the recipient's email address. The recipient receives a regular email with the link to the webversion and sees your newsletter exactly as you formatted it.
