# Creating emails in an automation

> Find, compose and edit emails, or copy them as a template from an existing campaign.

You create the emails for an automation in the same editor as a regular campaign, but in a different place and with fewer steps. They do not appear among your campaigns, and the automation itself determines who receives the email and when.

You can find them via Automations → View emails for the relevant automation, as well as from within the editor of that automation. This overview looks similar to the one under ‘Campaigns’, but only shows the emails for this automation. Here, you can view, copy and delete existing emails. Below the tabs, there is a link to the automation editor, and you can also pause or restart the automation here.

You can start a new email in two places:

* in this overview, using the ‘Create new email’ button. You link it later to a [Send email](/verstuur-e-mail) action.
* in the automation itself, by selecting ‘Create email’ in a ‘Send email’ action.

## Creating a new email

Wherever you start, you go through four steps: two fewer than for a regular campaign, because you do not select recipients or set a delivery time. In the top right corner, you will find ‘Steps’, which you can use to jump back and forth between the steps.

#### Enter the basic details

Give the email a name for internal use, choose a sender and a reply-to address, and write the subject line and the preview text. This works the same way as in a campaign, where [the explanation for step 1](/stap-1-vul-basisgegevens-in) describes each field.

#### Select template

Choose one of the templates you also use for your campaigns, or choose a different template to design the email from scratch. With a prepared or ready-made template for the drag & drop editor, you continue in the next step. If you choose an imported template for the special editor, you continue working in the editor associated with a [Joe template](/begrippenlijst#joe).

#### Fill in the template

Place the content here, just as in [step 4 of a campaign](/stap-4-vul-het-sjabloon): [this is how you build a newsletter](/hoe-maak-ik-een-goede-nieuwsbrief-in-de-drag-drop-editor), [these are the content blocks](/welke-inhoudsblokken-kan-ik-gebruiken-in-de-drag-drop-editor) and [this is how you format text](/de-opmaak-en-vormgeving-van-tekst). [Personalising](/hoe-personaliseer-ik-mijn-nieuwsbrief) also works in the same way: you can use all the variables from the list on which the automation runs, as long as the field you are calling exists in that list. In this step, you can also view the preview and send yourself a test email.

#### Check and confirm

Check the entered details and the compiled email below. If you want to change anything, click ‘Edit’ at the relevant section or use ‘Steps’ in the top right corner. If everything is correct, confirm at the bottom.

Where you end up after confirming depends on where you started. If you started in the automation, you will return to it. If you started in the overview, you will return to that overview via ‘Confirm and back to all emails’.

## Editing an email

You can edit emails in an automation, even if they have already been sent. Click ‘Edit again’ for the relevant email. There is no need to make a copy to update the email. When making changes, please bear the following in mind:

* The automation is automatically paused as soon as you change anything, so that a draft of your email is not sent to your subscribers. You will need to activate it again afterwards.
* The statistics continue to apply to a single email, even if it has been modified multiple times in the meantime.
* If you edit the content, the web version of previously sent emails will also change.
* For these last two reasons, you cannot choose a different template for an email you are editing.

If the change is so extensive that you still need a different template, make a copy of the email and edit that instead. The automation can remain active in the meantime. Once you are finished, select the copy instead of the original in the ‘Send email’ action.

Please bear in mind that when making major changes, it is not always clear how the automation will continue for subscribers who are already in it.

> **Warning**
>
> Do not forget to activate your automation again after making the changes.

## Reusing a campaign

You can reuse an existing campaign in an automation, provided you designed it in the drag & drop editor. To do so, you first convert the campaign into a template.

#### Open the campaign on the Campaigns page

If the campaign has already been sent, make a copy of it first. If the campaign is still being edited, go to step 4, ‘Vul het sjabloon’.

#### Save the campaign as a template

In that step, click ‘Save as template’. The layout and content of the campaign are now ready to use as a template.

#### Select the template in your automation email

Select this template when creating an email in the automation, in step 2, ‘Select template’. You can still edit the content afterwards.
