# Entering alt text for an image

> Add a description to your images for screen readers and blocked pictures.

In step 4 of creating your newsletter, you can add alt text to your image. Click on an image in your newsletter. On the left side of the screen, enter your text in the ‘Enter alt-text’ field. This field is in the same place in the ‘Image’ and ‘Text with image’ blocks.

## Why you should enter alt text

Alt text is a short description that appears in place of an image while it is not loaded. A text of just a few words helps you in five ways. The first two are the most important, as they ensure your message is also clear to readers who cannot see the image.

| Benefit | What the alt text does |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Accessibility | Screen readers read the description aloud, allowing people with a visual impairment to follow your newsletter as well. |
| Reach | Some email clients [block images by default](/waarom-zijn-afbeeldingen-niet-altijd-direct-zichtbaar-in-nieuwsbrieven). Your readers will still know what the image shows. |
| Findability | If your newsletter is shared online, the alt text helps search engines index the content. |
| Message | If an image fails to load, your message still comes across. |
| User experience | The extra description provides context, especially for mobile readers with a slow internet connection. |
