# Why does Gmail clip your newsletter?

> Read when Gmail clips an email at 115 kilobytes, what the consequences are and how to keep your newsletter below that limit.

At the bottom of your newsletter, Gmail readers sometimes see a link saying 'View entire message' or 'Message clipped'. Gmail then only displays part of your newsletter and hides the rest behind that link. This happens in the web version of Gmail as well as in the mobile apps for iPhone and Android.

If that link is not there and your newsletter merely looks different than expected, it is a display issue: read [why your newsletter differs from the preview](/in-de-mailbox-ziet-mijn-nieuwsbrief-er-anders-uit-dan-in-de-preview-hoe-kan-dat).

## When Gmail clips an email

Gmail clips an email as soon as the underlying code exceeds approximately 115 kilobytes (kB) in total. This applies purely to the code: the file size of the images in your newsletter does not count.

Newsletters created with Laposta's drag & drop editor usually stay below this limit. All available templates remain well below it. However, if your newsletter consists of many different blocks, the code may still exceed this limit.

## Consequences of a clipped newsletter

The last block of your newsletter, where people can unsubscribe, falls outside the visible part. That block also contains the code Laposta uses to measure whether a newsletter has been opened. With a clipped newsletter, Laposta therefore only registers an open if your subscriber clicks the link to view the entire message. With Gmail, images are also loaded from Google's cache, [which affects your opens as well](/gmail-slaat-alle-afbeeldingen-op-wat-betekent-dat-voor-mijn-openratio).

If you have set content blocks to 'invisible' for the display on mobile or desktop, those blocks will probably still be shown once a newsletter is clipped. This is because the underlying code for that setting has also been clipped.

## Viewing the size of your newsletter

#### Newsletter in progress

Go to step 5 in your campaign. The size is shown below the preview of the newsletter.

#### Sent newsletter

Go to Campaigns → Overview and click ‘View’ next to the newsletter. The size is shown right at the bottom of that page.

## Shortening your newsletter

The clipping itself cannot be prevented: if your newsletter is larger than 115 kB, Gmail will clip it. Laposta cannot change this. If you want your newsletter to be immediately visible in full in Gmail, your only option is to shorten it.

An alternative is to send a shortened version only to your Gmail subscribers. To do this, you can create a [segment](/hoe-segmenteer-ik-op-basis-van-relatiegegevens) with your Gmail subscribers. You can then send the full version to all other subscribers.

## Size of the standard blocks

Blocks consist of more code than on a regular web page. This is because email clients are much more unpredictable than web browsers, requiring a lot of extra code to display a newsletter properly everywhere.

An empty newsletter is 21.2 kB in size. The table shows roughly how much each standard block adds to this. If you fill and customise a block, the size will vary slightly, but not by much.

| Block | Size (kB) |
| --------------- | --------- |
| Text | 3.8 |
| Text with image | 4.5 |
| Title | 2.7 |
| Line | 2.6 |
| Image | 2.7 |
| Video | 2.9 |
| Button | 3.4 |
| Follow | 10.5 |
| Share | 15.3 |
| Columns | 0.3 |
