# Why is a telephone number or address invisible in your newsletter?

> Ensure that a telephone number or address in your newsletter remains readable when an email client automatically turns it into a link.

Is there a telephone number, address or email address in your newsletter that your subscriber cannot see, or that is shown in a different colour? If so, your subscriber's email client or device has automatically turned it into a clickable link, so the recipient can call, email or navigate at once. That link is given a colour that sometimes blends into the background. You will not see any of this in the editor or the preview, because it only happens when your subscriber opens the email.

If there are other differences between what you created and what your subscriber sees, take a look at [why your newsletter looks different in the inbox than in the preview](/in-de-mailbox-ziet-mijn-nieuwsbrief-er-anders-uit-dan-in-de-preview-hoe-kan-dat).

## Which text automatically becomes a link

Many email clients and mobile operating systems (iOS and Android) recognise seven types of data in your text. On mobile devices, the operating system often does this itself, even if the email client does not.

| Type of text | Example | Where this happens | A click opens |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Telephone number | `+31 6 12345678`                                             | Mostly on mobile devices            | The phone app                                  |
| Email address | `name@example.com` | Almost all email clients | The default email client |
| Web link (URL)   | `https://example.com`, `www.example.com`, `blog.example.com` | Almost always                       | The website                                    |
| Physical address | `10 Downing Street, SW1A 2AA London` | Mainly in Apple Mail and on mobile | A map app, such as Google Maps or Apple Maps |
| Date or time | `1 March 2024 at 15:00` | Mainly on mobile devices | The calendar app, with a suggested appointment |
| Tracking code | `3S123456789` | Some clients and operating systems | The parcel service's tracking page |
| Amount           | `€15,00`, `$19.99`                                           | Sometimes, mainly on mobile devices | A payment app or search results                |

## What you can do about this

You cannot deactivate the recognition itself, as this happens outside Laposta. However, you can make sure that such a link remains readable. Sometimes you can also prevent it from being turned into a link, or simply create the link yourself.

### Give links a colour that stands out

This is the most important step and the only one that always helps. If the link colour is not configured properly, an automatically generated link may be given the same colour as the background of the block, making the text appear to have vanished. You can configure the colour in two places in the drag & drop editor.

#### For the entire newsletter

Go to Blocks & Design → Global design → Body and adjust the ‘Link color’ right at the bottom of the left-hand pane under ‘Links’. You can read what else you can configure here in [Configuring text formatting in your newsletter](/de-opmaak-en-vormgeving-van-tekst).

#### For a single text block

Select the ‘Text’ block, click ‘Design’ at the top, choose ‘Text’ and adjust the link colour at the bottom of the screen. This setting only applies to that single block.

### Preventing text from being turned into a link

You can try to block the recognition by placing the text inside a `<span>`. In the text block, click ‘Source code’ and put the tags around the text, for example like this: `<span>+31 6 12345678</span>`.

![The Source code button above a text box, with the telephone number between span tags below it](file:assets/images/schermen-en/b1-06--broncode.png)

Laposta cannot guarantee that this will always work. A newsletter already contains a lot of HTML, and long newsletters are [clipped by Gmail, for example](/waarom-breekt-gmail-mijn-nieuwsbrief-af). The ‘Source code’ button is intended for the text and links within that single text block, such as an anchor link, a `tel:` link or a span like this, and not for changing the structure of the block. You are responsible for any code you add yourself; see [Can I add my own HTML code in the editor?](/kan-ik-zelf-html-code-aan-mijn-nieuwsbrief-toevoegen).

### Create the link yourself

You can also place the link yourself. That way, you decide which text is clickable and where it leads, and it will be given the link colour you have configured. For a telephone number, the easiest way to do this is via the editor's link window, as described in [Placing a phone number as a clickable link](/hoe-kan-ik-een-link-maken-van-een-telefoonnummer). In the source code of a text block, such a link looks like this:

```html
<a href="tel:+31612345678">+31 6 12345678</a>
<a href="https://maps.google.com/?q=Dam+1+1012+JS+Amsterdam">Dam 1, 1012 JS Amsterdam</a>
```

The first line makes a telephone number clickable, and the second opens an address in Google Maps.
