How do I segment based on multiple criteria?
On the page Subscribers → Segment, you can easily segment based on multiple selection rules (criteria).
When creating a new segment, you first click if you want to define your first selection rule based on subscriber data (such as the province your subscriber lives in) or campaign results (one of the many statistics from your newsletter campaigns).
After clicking either of these options, a selection block is immediately created. One selection block is one coloured square. Within one selection block, you can use multiple rules. (By the way, you can also use multiple rules in each additional block).
So, to define a segment, you can use multiple selection blocks. And you can create multiple criteria for each block.
Example
An example to clarify: imagine that from your whole list, you only want to send a newsletter to subscribers who are over 18 and live in the Netherlands. You then segment - to start - based on subscriber data. When you click 'Subscriber data', you select Country in the first column. In the second column, you select 'is equal to'. And choose 'the Netherlands' in the third column.
Using a second selection criterion in the same selection block allows you to narrow down your selection even further. In this case, the second line is also Subscriber data. The accompanying field (first column) is '18+'. The second column is 'is equal to'. Finally, the third column is 'yes'.
If you then click the 'Save segment' button, you will have selected all subscribers from the Netherlands over 18 in your list.
Combining subscriber data and campaign results
Imagine that aside from all subscribers over 18 in the Netherlands (from the example above) you also want to add everyone who has entered blue as a colour, and who has not click a specific link in your last newsletter to this segment. You then choose to 'Expand selection' below 'OR'.
Then you create a Subscriber data selection rule in the second block (for the field: colour, is equal to blue). Next, you create a second selection rule in the same block, this time a Campaign results one. After clicking this, you choose 'have not clicked a specific link in a specific campaign'. After this, you can choose the right campaign and link.
When you have added the second selection block, you have created a segment with which you can send a newsletter to both all subscribers over 18 in the Netherlands, and everyone who has a preference for blue and has not clicked a specific link in a specific campaign.
