How do I put a link in my newsletter?

You can add links to the text in your newsletter. With a link you can direct your reader to a webpage (normal link) or to an email address (mailto link).

  • To add a normal link or a mailto link, first click on the block of text of your choice in your newsletter. Then select the word or words in which you want to insert your link, in the text field of the editor. Finally, click on the chainlink icon above the text field of the editor.
  • When your subscriber clicks a link - whether from their email client or from the web version of the newsletter - the link will always open in a new window. In other words, subscribers are not redirected from your newsletter permanently.
  • If you want, you can add a subscriber variable to a normal link. This makes sense if, for example, you want your subscribers to automatically log into your website.
  • If you want to add a mailto link, you must choose Email as Link Type instead of URL. You can then enter your email address. Here, you can also enter the subject line and (part of) the answer of the email message.
  • Links and email addresses may not be hyphenated. Therefore, if you insert a link or email address in a narrow column, make sure that it does not push the column outward; you will notice in a Preview or Test mail that the newsletter is wider at that point. Unfortunately, our program cannot set a fixed width for columns. A number of email clients does not support this.

Tip: Make sure that a URL only includes permitted characters!

If you use characters in a URL that technically aren't allowed, such as an accented version of a character (é, ü), the link in your newsletter might no longer work. URL's are coded when you send your newsletter; special characters in the URL can therefore prevent it from working properly.

Only use permitted characters in links. If necessary, you can request this from your web builder.

We encourage you to read up on the information below regarding links in your newsletters, so that you avoid putting a URL directly into your text, and know how to place a link behind an image.
