Special fonts (webfonts) in email

In our editor, you can choose from many different fonts. Unfortunately, not all recipients of your newsletter will see these fonts.

These special fonts are so-called web fonts. By using these fonts, the design of the font is requested via the internet, and the font does not need to be present on the recipient's computer.

The use of web fonts is no problem at all for web browsers; almost every modern website uses them nowadays. This is different for email clients. A number of email clients lag behind web browsers where functionality is concerned, and are unable to display the web fonts (yet).

Email clients that cannot display web fonts will instead display a font that is available on the recipient's computer, and looks as similar as possible.

Which email clients support web fonts?

Web fonts are displayed by:

  • Android mail app (but not the Gmail app)
  • Apple Mail
  • iOS Mail
  • Outlook 2000
  • Outlook.com app
  • AOL Mail

This may not seem much, but they are very widely used email clients, so a large proportion of your recipients will see the webfonts anyway. Moreover, the webfonts are visible when clicking on the web version.

Important exceptions are Outlook 07/10/13 or 16 and Gmail.
