When do you need an extra checkbox for the newsletter?

Under the GDPR, subscribing to a newsletter must be a clear, affirmative action. If you use a Laposta subscribe form purely for your newsletter, it is usually completely clear to your subscribers what they are consenting to: receiving the newsletter.

When do you need an extra checkbox?

Are you using a subscribe form to offer something else, such as a free e-book, and do you also want to send these people your newsletter? Then it will not be automatically clear to them that they are subscribing to both.

You can make this clear in two ways:

  • State in the text above the form that they will receive both the e-book and the newsletter. You should then also adjust the text on the button, for example to ‘Receive e-book and newsletter’.
  • Include an extra checkbox in the form, accompanied by text such as ‘Yes, I would also like to receive the newsletter’.

Configuring the extra checkbox

You can place an extra checkbox by adding a new field to your list. You can read which settings to use for this under the consent field in Creating a consent campaign.

You can make this new field required. If you also want to send the e-book to people who do not subscribe to your newsletter, do not make the field required and add the extra option ‘No preference’. This is because the checkbox must not be set to ‘Yes’ by default.

You can read how to adjust the text and position of the field, and how to configure whether it is required, under the standalone subscribe form or the embedded form.

If you leave the choice optional, you may only send the newsletter to the subscribers who have ticked ‘Yes’. You can create a segment for this.
