Why have words been changed in the Gmail mobile app?

Has a subscriber reported that your newsletter contains words you did not put in it? Nothing has changed in the newsletter itself: in the mobile view, the recipient’s phone is displaying different words from those actually in the email. This appears to be related to the settings on the device your subscriber is using to read the newsletter.

The helpdesk has been receiving reports about this since spring 2025. So far, this has involved Dutch-language newsletters viewed by a subscriber in the mobile view of Gmail on an iPhone. In these cases, certain words have been replaced by a different word. Both the desktop view and the web version (on both mobile and desktop) do show the correct words.

Is the issue not with the words themselves, but with the formatting, such as colours, fonts or white space? If so, take a look at why your newsletter in the inbox differs from the preview.

Laposta is investigating which email clients and operating systems are affected by this and whether there is a way to prevent it. Has one of your subscribers received a newsletter like this? The helpdesk would love to hear about it, so we can look more specifically into causes and solutions.

Please send a screenshot of the altered display to helpdesk@laposta.nl, preferably along with the following details about your subscriber’s device:

  • the email client used
  • the make and model of the phone
  • the operating system
  • the language settings
