Placing a video in your newsletter

It is not possible to play a video directly inside an email. Using the ‘Video’ block, you can place a preview with a play button that links to the page where the video is hosted.

Drag the ‘Video’ block from ‘Blocks’ into your newsletter and enter the URL of the page containing the video in the formatting settings. A play button will automatically appear over the first image of your video. To read more about what else you can configure for each block, see The content blocks in the drag & drop editor.

What your subscriber sees after clicking

When your subscriber clicks the preview, the page with the video opens. Whether the video starts playing immediately depends on where it is hosted.

Fixing black bars on a YouTube video

For a YouTube video, Laposta retrieves the thumbnail from the YouTube servers. If your video has a different aspect ratio from the standard 16:9 YouTube ratio, black bars may appear at the top and bottom or at the sides.

You can resolve this in YouTube, not in Laposta. Add a custom thumbnail there and replace the first thumbnail, as that is the one Laposta selects. On the YouTube website, you can read how to replace the thumbnail. You cannot adjust this using the Laposta image editor, as that only works for images you place in your newsletter yourself.

Why a video does not play inside the email itself

Email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird do not allow videos to be played. To prevent misuse, email clients are deliberately kept as basic as possible. That is why in Laposta, just as in other newsletter tools, you cannot add a video directly.

Placing an animated GIF in your newsletter

You can include an animated GIF in your newsletter. However, not all email clients display these moving images. If your subscriber’s email client does not support this, the animated GIF will be shown as a standard, static image. Neither Laposta nor other newsletter tools can change this.
