Editing the preheader at the top of your newsletter

At the top of every newsletter is a fixed block with two columns: the preheader. In the left column, you can put a short, concise sentence about your newsletter. By default, the right column contains a link to the webversion, which you can edit just like the text.

The selected preheader block in the editor: on the left the text field under the Content tab, on the right the preheader bar with the webversion link

To find out what is in the second column and how to restore the link if it has been removed, read Finding the webversion, edit and unsubscribe links.

The preheader is not the same as the previewtext. You can read about the difference in Filling in the preview text.

Editing the design

Click the ‘Design’ tab at the top left above the text editor. The settings for the block are divided across three buttons:

ButtonWhat you set with it
Textthe complete formatting of the text
Boxwhether a background colour is shown, and the inner margins
Outsidethe background colour and the outer margin

Showing or hiding the preheader on mobile

On mobile phones, the preheader is hidden by default. There are two reasons for this:

  • On a small screen, it is better to start straight away with the actual content.
  • The link to the webversion is not needed, as the display in mobile email clients is usually just as good as the webversion, including images.

Would you still like to show the preheader on mobile? Go to Preheader → Design, find ‘Hide this block on mobile’ and untick the box. This checkbox works the same way as for any other block, see Formatting for desktop or mobile display.

Hiding the preheader

If you prefer to leave the preheader out altogether, click the block, go to the ‘Settings’ tab on the left, select ‘Hide’ in the ‘Show or hide Preheader?’ menu and click ‘Save’.

In that case, make sure you also delete any text you may have entered into it. If an email client such as Gmail clips your newsletter, the preheader might still be shown.
